West meets East I
Foundation Model of East-West Juxtaposition
A model is proposed here which attempts to lay the foundation for detailed discussion and analyses of the juxtaposition and relationship of TCM with western medical biosciences. This model forms the basis of ACU Centre's approach to east/west explanation and integration. In an introductory paper there are some orientating remarks and comments dealing with terminology and formatting. There is also an explanatory list of most of the TCM terms and abbreviations used in the papers on these web pages. One paper presents the three tiered model itself. Another reviews autonomic regulation in the central nervous system and a functional homeostatic hierarchy is identified, which is then applied to the model (and generally to TCM). There is also a survey of the impact of acupuncture on the central nervous system (CNS). Other papers (rep1, rep2, rep3) argue that the model is an adequate representation, in broad terms, of traditional Chinese medical theory. An integrated notion of Depth (combining TCM and WMB) is developed within the context of the model - which is mainly relevant to tier one of the model. It is suggested that tier two functions as a physiological (neurohumeral) fulcrum, coordinating activity between all three tiers - but particularly between tiers one and two. Almost all papers posted on these 'West meets East' web pages will relate in some way to this model. A list of references is available for the papers on the model as well as those on the SanJiao. A Juxtapositional view of the San Jiao This group of papers applies the model to a complex area of TCM theory, the San Jiao.
